This study uses secondary data from statistical yearbooks and the result of Vietnam living standard surveys to analyze trends and the relationship between agricultural production and food consumption in the period of 2006-2020. The analysis shows that the output of most agricultural products has increased over time, while the trend of consuming these products has not always increased. Indeed, the annual growth rate of rice production reached 1.27%/year between 2006 and 2020, but rice consumption decreased at a rate of 5.59%/year in the same period. Fruit production increased by an average of 3.95%/year but the consumption growth rate of 2.80%/year. Meat production rose at 4.28%/year but lower than the growth rate of meat consumption at 6.43%/year. For eggs, production and consumption have a relatively similar growth rate, approximately 10.0%/year. Meanwhile, fish and shrimp consumption did not change, but production of fishery increased by 6.08%/year during the study period. These results confirmed that the trend of food consumption does not depend entirely on food production but also on other factors such as changes in income, lifestyle or urbanization. It is meaningful in reorienting the production structure to match the consumption trend in the future.
