The aim of this study is to map the current state of verdure in urban areas and monitor its development in Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City from 2006 to 2012 by using multispectral QuickBird satellite images. The study results show that high resolution QuickBird imagery reflects quite accurately the progressive of urban verdure in both space and time (Overall accuracy is about 88 % ). The verdure areas in study area decreased by 168 ha from 1.248ha in 2006 to 1.081ha in 2012. Initial results identified that some areas as An Hoi, An Cu, Tan An, An Lac, An Nghiep, Thoi Binh and An Phu Ward did not reach the urban verdure standards setted by the Ministry of Construction. Results provided baseline data which helps local authorities for suitabe verdure planning in Can Tho city to ensure environmental safety standards setted by the Ministry of Construction regulations.
