In the dynamic landscape of global trade, free trade agreements (FTAs) and bilateral trade agreements (BTAs) have been formed as pivotal instruments driving economic integration and fostering cooperation between nations (Kawai and Wignaraja, 2011). Vietnam has actively participated in many BTAs, leveraging these partnerships to optimize benefits from participating in the global supply chain, expanding its export markets, attracting foreign investment, providing domestic enterprises with enhanced access to international markets, and bolstering integration into the global economy (Vietnam Briefing, 2021). This paper aims to assess the current status of bilateral trade between Vietnam and three major trading partners (United States, Korea, Japan) the period 1995-2022 in order to highlight the impact of FTAs on bilateral trade. The results show that the growth in trade relations between Vietnam and Japan has become more stable and less volatile since the Vietnam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (VJEPA) between the two countries took effect. The VJEPA has contributed to establishing a stable and predictable business environment, reducing uncertainties in the trading process between Vietnam and Japan. In addition, the results indicates that due to the relatively short period since the VKFTA took effect and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the influence of the VKFTA on the growth rate of bilateral trade between Vietnam and South Korea from 2015 to 2022 has not shown a noticeable difference compared to the period before the VKFTA became effective. Therefore, it is premature to conclude whether the VKFTA effectively stimulates the growth rate of trade between Vietnam and South Korea. Regarding bilateral trade between Vietnam and USA, despite the initial fluctuation post-BTA enactment, the trade landscape eventually attained a level of equilibrium, demonstrating stability in the bilateral trade dynamics between Vietnam and the United States over the period from 2010 to 2022. In summary, it seems that the impact of BTAs on bilateral trade is complicated and need to further investigate.
