This paper studies the moderating role of subsidiary size on the relationship between national institutional difference and subsidiary’s access to complementary local assets. Building upon institutional theory, we argue that the institutional distance between home and host countries is negatively associated with subsidiary’s access to local complementary assets. We also predict that this linkage is contingent on the size of subsidiaries. The data of multinational enterprise subsidiaries located in Vietnam were extracted from the World Bank Enterprise Survey. Results confirm that the larger subsidiaries’ access to complementary local assets in a more institutionally distant country are higher than that of smaller subsidiaries. The study provides implications for the subsidiary management.
