Experiment was conducted in 250-L plastic tanks to evaluate the potential use of Artemia biomass as protein source in practical diets for postlarval Penaeus monodon (initial-mean weight of 0.033 g). Six experimental diets were formulated by replacing levels of the fishmeal protein 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%). The 0% Artemia sasiation treatment, in which Kien Giang fish meal was the only main protein source, was considered as the control diet. All experimental diets were prepared to be equivalent in crude protein (40%) and lipid (7%). Shrimp postlarvae were stocked at salinity of 10 ppt and fed ad libitum 4 times a day for 45 days. The results showed that survival of experimental shrimps were not affected by the feeding treatments, ranging from 81.1-86.7%. A gradual increase in growth performance (specific growth rate, daily weight gain and total length) of the shrimp was achieved on increasing dietary inclusion of Artemia protein, and significant difference was found between the control and from 60% fishmeal replacement onwards. Furtheremore, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio were better in the test diets than in the control. Overall, performance of shrimp fed the test diets were better than or equal to those fed the control diet as seen by the better growth rate and feed efficiency and higher resistance to formalin stress. These results indicated that Artemia biomass can be used as protein sources in practical diets for the tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon, indicating the high potential of using locally available of Artemia biomass in the region.
