To increase revenue, many traditional grocery retail chains now implement an omni-channel retail strategy, in which an online sales channel via a website or mobile application is added to the chain of physical stores. To fulfill online orders, these retailers often offer home delivery services. This is considered a costly activity and especially challenging for grocery retail. This study analyzes the current situation and challenges related to home delivery activities that omni-channel grocery retail chains face in the Mekong River Delta (MRD). Based on a literature review and expert interviews, the research results show that these retailers are facing several homedelivery- related challenges such as (1) different requirements for storage conditions due to the perishability of the goods, (2) the problem “customer not at home” and the time frame requirements for delivery, (3) customer density and market penetration and (4) return anagement and handling of the returned goods. The above results discuss several solutions to address the challenges of home delivery service in the MRD and Vietnam.
