Weedy rice is a major problem for rice cultivation in many countries, including Vietnam. Due to the complexity and multidimensional aspects of weedy rice species, weed control measures are often difficult and require persistence and care in crop management. In this manuscript, we review the status and problems of weedy rice in Vietnam and some other countries, including the strategies for controlling this weed. The main strategies for controlling weedy rice include preventing infiltration or reinfection of weedy rice, limiting and reducing the amount of weedy rice seeds, preventing germination and growth of weedy rice, and changing the rice field environment. Biotechnology and chemical herbicides are also potential solutions for managing weedy rice. However, the strategies used for controlling weedy rice must be adjusted frequently based on changes in cultivated rice varieties, cropping systems, farming practices, water availability, and marketing standards for rice grains. Overall, we conclude that the effective management of weedy rice requires a multidisciplinary and integrated approach that includes the adoption of appropriate weed control measures and regular monitoring of weedy rice populations.
