Constructed wetlands (CWs) technology is becoming more and more important in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) because wetlands have proven to be well-established and a cost-effective method for treating wastewater. Using CWs for the purification of aquaculture water is a quite new technique in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, where aquaculture wastewater is commonly discharged without treatment into adjacent water bodies. This practice creates environmental problems in surface water as well as spreading of diseases between aquaculture farmers who use the polluted river water as a water supply in their ponds. The aim of this study was to assess an environmental friendly alternative method for sustainable fish production by integrating constructed wetlands for water purification into recirculating intensive catfish tank culture. The CWs showed good performance in nitrogen and phosphorus removal from feeding food. Remarkably, renewable water is no need during the experimental period while water quality remained within limit for normal fish growth. Aquaculture ponds integrated with constructed wetland systems for purification of the water appear be a promising technique for sustainable fish production with a reduced need for freshwater recharge and close-to-zero discharge.
