Study on the effects of mixed feeding on digestive enzyme activities and growth of snakehead (Chana striata) was conducted with two experiments. The first experiment examed the activities of enzymes such as ?-amylase, pepsin and chymotrypsin in fish intestine and stomach and the second one determined the fish growth.
There were four triplicated treatments for each experment. The mixed feeding was designed including control treatment (daily feeding), treatment 1 (starved 1 day+fed 6 days), treatment 2 (starved 2 days+fed 5 days), and treatment 3 (starved 3 days+fed 4 days). The initial fish weight of 5-10 g each and the stocking density was 50 fish in 500-L tank (containing 300 L of water). Both experiment were last for 60 days. The amylase activities in the stomach of fish in treatment 1, 2 and 3being 1.49±0.11; 1.55±0.12 and 1.53±0.05 mU/min/mg protein, respectively were significantly higher than those of control treatment (1.23±0.01 mU/min/mg protein) (p< 0.05). The pepsine activities in stomach and chymotripsine in intestine of fish were highest at treatment 1 (2.37±0.04 and 139.10±10.98 mU/mL/mg protein, respectively). The daily weight gain of snakehead in control treatment was highest (0.35±0.003 g/day), but this was no significantly different if compared to those of treatments starving 1 and 2 days (0.32±0.02 and 0.30±0.008 g/day, respectively) (p>0.05). However, the daily weight gain (0.20±0.007 g/day) of fish in treatment 3 was significantly lower if compared to those of other treatments. FCR of treatments 1 (1.57±0.04) were better than those of control treatment (2.31±0.16); and the survival rate of fish of treatment 1 (87.3±3.71%) was significantly higher if compared to those of control treatment (74.0±3.05%). The result shows that the mixed feeding can be applied for rearing snakehead contributing to better feed use efficiency and production cost.
