Urbanization has had a substantial impact on the life of every household in suburban areas. The change in the scale and agricultural production activities leads to changes in the living conditions, livelihoods, social mobility, and especially the lifestyle of residents. We conducted a study in Cai Rang district, a suburb of Can Tho city in Vietnam, to analyze the livelihood characteristics of people living in the suburbs. We applied the face-to-face interview method with prepared questionnaires to collect primary data. From there, we propose production models suitable to the socio-economic conditions and people’s livelihoods and contribute to improving people’s income and living standards. This study uses descriptive statistics and multiple variables regression model analysis. We have achieved some main results: Firstly, the livelihood strengths that need to be promoted include family labor resources, professional qualifications of workers, and diversity of livelihoods. Besides, the weaknesses that need to be overcome are the low education level of the household head, lack of capital and lack of production land. Secondly, total household income is affected by factors including working-age people, total production land area, and vocational training. Finally, people face difficulties diversifying livelihood activities in production and need supportive policies and projects to sustain household livelihoods.
