This study examined the awareness, contents, methods and outcomes of self-directed learning (SDL) among English-majored students at Cantho University (CTU). The survey data were collected from 3 froups of participants, including 179 students, 22 lecturers and 26 administrators and were subsequently compared and analyzed. The research results showed that all the three groups of respondents highly valued the importance of SDL, but the students mainly spent time on self-directed learning at the request of the lecturers and watching video clips on the Internet. However, they lacked real-world contexts, and opportunities for cultural exchanges with English-speaking communities and were limited in adequate internship time at English-speaking companies. The findings suggested that the university should expand extracurricular opportunities and partnerships with English-speaking organizations and companies to provide the students with more self-initiated learning activities.
