In the context of international integration and the development of science and technology, education will be oriented towards creativity, focusing on skills and self-oriented learning. Thus, in the process of education, the learner becomes the subject of education or self-education. In fact, it requires a self­study approach, but it is still a new concept and there is very little research in Vietnam on this model. With the theoretical method of research, the paper examines the nature of self-study through a number of self- study models that have been effectively applied in countries around the world in terms of competence approaches, individual responsibility and each stage of the self­study process. These studies show that' self-study plays a key role in the student’s learning; through student self-study activities, students’ attitudes, abilities, responsibilities and initiatives are demonstrated . These models will be a reference, a solution for the development of self-study and self-education skills for students of universities in Vietnam at this stage.
