This action research investigates a podcast learning project integrated into an English communication 1 class aiming at promoting the students’ extensive listening practices outside the classroom. The study collected data through questionnaires, students’ podcast diaries, and semi-structured interviews to examine the students’ practices and their perceptions on the use of podcasts for pedagogical purposes. Results showed that the students had considerably positive attitudes towards the effectiveness of the podcast learning project on their linguistic competences improvements, enhancement of motivations on their learning and the convenience of podcasts to listen at any time and place. However, the students also experienced frustration with podcasts delivered at a fast speed and containing a lot of new words, which hindered their full understanding. Overall, the benefits gained from the podcast learning project outweighed its drawbacks, which showed its considerable potential for educational purposes in EFL/ESL teaching and learning contexts.
