Can Tho City is one of 13 administrative units in the Mekong Delta. In recent years, coupled with socio-economic development, the process of urbanization in this city takes place at a very fast pace and complexity. This has made a big change in the built-up land area in Can Tho City. This paper introduces the initial results of combining GIS and Remote Sensing tools in assessing the area change of built-up land in Can Tho City in the period from 1988 to 2018 with Landsat images. The results show that the area of built-up land in the study area increased rapidly during the research period, from 11.61 km2 (1988) to 88.30 km2 (2018), an increase of 7.61 times in 20 years, the main reason is due to the urbanization. This is the basis for developing effective and sustainable urban management strategies in this region.
