Many Vietnamese university graduates have been claimed to lack the knowledge and skills needed for jobs, which results in their struggling to find an employment after university, even in the field that they majored in. Graduates from English Language Studies are not an exception. These graduates even have to encounter harsher competition with those graduating from other fields for these people have both good English proficiency and field-specific expertise such as Business Administration, Tourism, etc. In such a context, this study examines the skills and knowledge that employers require for English-majored graduates. A questionnaire was designed based on a content analysis of 32 job positions for English-majored graduates posted online from January 2017 to June 2018. Common job requirements were listed in the questionnaire as separate Likert-scale items. A hundred and sixty students of English Language Studies were required to decide their own level of meeting each requirement. The findings reveal that many students do not have the attributes needed for the jobs. This study concludes with suggestions on what the training institutions can do to improve English majors’ employability.
