Transformation of farming systems in coastal Mekong Delta provides a real picture of how coastal farmers respond to rapid changes in agricultural production and socio-economic conditions within coastal regions. These transformations have relation to efforts of both government and coastal communities in attempting to manage the coastal resources. Transformation of farming systems in the zone has gone through 4 major distinct development stages, pre-development (1975-1988), early development (1989-1999), shrimp boom (2000-2006) and recent development (2007-2009). The evolution of farming systems is moving towards an intensification of production system, rice-shrimp system appears to be more sustainable. There are two major strategies for better management and enhance sustainability of shrimp farming in coastal Mekong Delta, the ?hard-measures? or infrastructure measures and the ?soft-measures? or technological measures.
