Stock derivatives plays a significant role in stock markets of developing countries. Empirical studies show that the introduction of stock derivatives has positive effects on spot markets at the first stage of establishment. The objective of this study is to enrich the literature in this field by measuring the impact of introduction of Index future trading on spot market returns in Vietnam. Data used in this study is weekly closing VN30-Index during the period from February 6th, 2012 to September 18th, 2019. Using OLS and GARCH (1,1) models, the empirical findings reveal that the introduction of Index future contract trading leads to an increase in the spot market returns (VN30-Index). Specifically, the VN30-Index increased by 0,013% in the period after stock derivatives trading. This result supports the view that derivatives trading contributes to stabilizing the spot market.
