Along with the global integration, opportunities for communication between Vietnamese people and foreigners have been increasing and English speaking proficiency is seen as a prerequisite for most students’ jobs seeking after graduation. Particularly for undergraduates whose major is English, their fluency and proficiency in English speaking skill can be considered as one of the prime concerns. With such significant impacts, this productive skill has been more paid attention in the curriculum of English language program at Can Tho university of Vietnam. In reality, however, many English language freshmen find it still difficult to express themselves in spoken language in the target language. As a result, the objective of this study was to investigate difficulties faced by English-major freshmen in speaking skill. The participants were 131 freshmen majoring in English language. The data obtained from the survey questionnaire, individual interviews, focus group interviews and class observation. The research findings showed that the difficulties for freshmen’s English speaking in this context arose from both internal and external factors. Based on the results, possible suggestions were considered to tackle such challenges to help English-major freshmen speak English more effectively.
