Thirty farmers in total, who applied three different farming systems (Artemia monoculture, salt mono-production and rotational Artemia- salt production) in Bac Lieu province, the Mekong delta of Vietnam, were monitored. The data of Artemia and salt production as well as seasonal production were recorded from 2010 to 2012 with the purpose of comparing the production and their economic efficiencies under climate change scenario. Artemia and salt production takes place in the dry season from December to May, or longer depending on the weather and salinity in the production areas. For the rotational Artemia- salt production, at the beginning of the dry season, half of the production area is utilized for stocking Artemia from January to March (when high water temperature (>35oC) is dominant). The remaining area is used for evaporation and then the total area of the system is shifted to salt production until May. When rainfall often happens, farmers stop producing salt which allows using the crystallizer and the concentrated saline water ponds for re-stocking Artemia at the beginning of the rainy season, which can be maintained until July. The surveyed results showed that the average yields of Artemia cysts from 2010 to 2012 in monoculture and rotational culture were similar and varied in the ranges of 67.7-76.9 and 66.8-85.9 kg/ha/season, respectively. On the contrary, salt production in the mono-system was much higher (19.5-53.9 ton/ha/season) than in the rotational system (13.2-31.8 ton/ha/season). Considering to economic aspects, higher net profits were obtained in the rotational system (2,018-3,181 USD/ha) compared to the mono production systems (443-691 USD/ha for salt production and 1066-2,772 USD/ha for Artemia culture. These results reveal that solar salt works in Vietnam are suitable biotopes for the rotational production of salt and Artemia in the dry season, which has improved the use of land resources and income for farmers. Moreover, the rotational system could adapt to climate changes; farmers can make alternative Artemia or salt production depending on weather conditions and cyst/salt prices.
