No Poverty (Goal 1) and Zero Hunger (Goal 2) are two of the top goals of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. This study aims to explore the causal relationship between poverty escape, household dietary diversity, and food security in rural Vietnam. The study used panel data from 814 low-income households from the Viet Nam Access to Resources Household Survey (VARHS), conducted in 2016 and 2018. The Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) and per capita food expenditure were used to identify the consumption patterns of the households and their food security status. The study used the difference-in-differences (DID) method to assess the association between poverty escape, diversification of consumption, and food security in households. The findings show that as households escaped poverty, they diversified their food consumption and increased per capita food expenditure. Consequently, through poverty eradication policies, the government could achieve both poverty reduction and enhanced food security at the same time.
