Coastal shrimp farming is the livelihood for millions of inhabitants in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam,
but these shrimp farmers are faced with a lot of risks and uncertainties and this results to low agricultural
output and hinders the rural farmers from pursuing their farming activities. This study assessed the risks
and determinants of risk management strategies among the brackish shrimp farmers in the Mekong Delta
of Vietnam. A multistage sampling technique was used in the selection of respondents. Data were
collected with the use of structured questionnaire administered to 380 aquaculture brackish shrimp
farmers. Binary logit regression model was used to determine the factors influencing the choice of risk
management strategies among aquaculture brackish shrimp farmers in the study area. Results of the
study showed that majority of the farmers identified loss of shrimp production due to disease (78.95%)
and loss due to the climate change in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam (76.31%) as sources of risk farmers
were exposed to. Also greater number of the respondents adopted diversification into nonfarm activities
and using of disease resistant species and techinical mechanisms as risk management strategies to protect
their production. The result of the study also confirmed that age, educational level, risk attitude,
participation in training, farm size, credit access and total production costs were the major determinants
of the farmers’ choice of risk management strategies. This study also explore the willingness to
participate for hypothetical aquacultural insurance products of aquaculture brackish shrimp farmers in
the study area. This might be helpful to the insurance companies when designing insurance policies to
develop in the future. It was recommended that government should make extension services functional
and provide policies that will help the farmers as this will significantly propel an increase in the choice
effective risk management strategies in the area.
