The abundant coconut fibers in Mekong Delta ? Vietnam were used as reinforcement for composite to improve the economic value of coconut trees and the income of farmers who earn their living with this type of plant. Moreover, the development of the coconut fibers reinforced composite also aims to protect the environment. This paper presents the research and development of coconut fibres reinforced polypropylene (PP) composite including technology for fibres extraction and random mat production, chemical treatment on fibres and the mechanical characterization of their composites. The effects of binders used in random mat and those of chemical treatment on the mechanical performance of the composite were evaluated. It was found that coconut fibres/random mat contribute significantly the tensile modulus (not strength) of PP composite. The use of latex and polyester as binder for coconut fibre random mats does not affect significantly on the mechanical properties (particularly impact strength) of their PP composite. Simple alkaline treatment with the concentration of 1, 2, 3 and 4% for 1, 2, 3 and 4 days was applied on fibres. The results show that the treatment significantly improved adhesion between fibers and matrix. Therefore, the mechanical performance of composite reinforced with treated fibers is much better than that of the composite reinforced with the untreated ones.
