The Binh Tay Liquor JSC produces alcohol and liquors from rice and tapioca with a capacity of 20,000 L/day, and discharges approximately 180-200 m3/day of liquid stillage waste. The liquid stillage waste consists of dry matter (1.8% w/v), crude protein (1.22% w/v), starch (1.0% w/v), crude fiber (1.3% w/v), minerals, pH 3.9, and no coliform bacteria. Thus it can serve as a suitable medium for the growth useful microorganisms.
The production of Bio-HR bio-product was successfully conducted at the scales of 10 liters/batch and 100 liters/batch in laboratory by adding sugarcane molasses (2.0% w/v) and selected probiotics strains (Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae), then inoculating for three days. The BIO-HR product (pH 4.0) comprised of Bacillus sp. (107 CFU/ml), Lactobacillus sp. (108 CFU/ml), and yeast (107 CFU/ml).
Testing of the Bio-HR on 21-day-old Luong Phuong chickens and weaned pigs showed that, by adding 0.25% (v/v) of Bio-HR in drinking water for chicken for 8 weeks, the average weight (kg/head) of the treatment lot was increased by 30% and the feed conversion ratio (FCR) was reduced by 16% compared to the control lot. In addition, by adding of 0.2% (v/v) of Bio-HR in drinking water for pigs, the average weight of the treatment lot was increased by 7% and the FCR was reduced by 13-22% compared to the control.
The production of bio-product from stillage waste helps the ethanol factories to reduce waste water pollution; instead of entire waste water treatment, the ethanol producers can reuse stillage to produce a high quality bio-product for livestock in order to reduce the production cost and achieve more profit.
