Climate change has become one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century for developing countries. Shrimp
farming is the livelihood for millions of inhabitants in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, but these shrimp farmers
are facing significant risks arising from weather and extreme events. This study aimed to assess the climate
change risk management strategies among the coastal shrimp farmers in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. Data
were collected with the use of structured questionnaire administered to 350 aquaculture brackish shrimp
farmers in the study area. Logistic regression model to uncover factors behind farmers’ decisions to adopt
management strategies to adapt to climate change risks among the pond aquaculture shrimp farmers. The study
revealed that most of the respondents were aware that climate is changing. Overall, 67.14% of shrimp farmers
only used a single strategy, whereas the others used more than only one strategy to manage climate change
related risks. Age, educational level, membership in a farmers association, participation in training, farm size,
credit access and total production costs were identified as factors driving the probability of using combined
risk management strategies. It was recommended that government should make extension services functional
and provide policies that will help boost the socio-economic welfare of farmers as this will significantly
increase the adoption effective risk management strategies in adaptation to climate change in this area.
