In the context of international integration and the development of science and technology, education will be oriented towards creativity, focusing on skills and self-oriented learning. Thus, in the process of education, the learner becomes the subject of education or self-education. In fact, it requires a selfstudy approach, but it is still a new concept and there is very little research in Vietnam on this model. With the theoretical method of research, the paper examines the nature of self-study through a number of self- study models that have been effectively applied in countries around the world in terms of competence approaches, individual responsibility and each stage of the selfstudy process. These studies show that' self-study plays a key role in the student’s learning; through student self-study activities, students’ attitudes, abilities, responsibilities and initiatives are demonstrated . These models will be a reference, a solution for the development of self-study and self-education skills for students of universities in Vietnam at this stage.
