The objective of the study is to investigate the potential of using high resolution satellite image (Quickbird), multi-temporal to monitor the spatial expansion of urban in Can Tho city, and evaluate quantitatively development rates of urban in Can Tho city. Data used in this study is from two different dates (2006 and 2012). Using object-based classification approach for detecting number of houses and apply spatial analysis in GIS to calculate the number of houses in the study area for different directions. The results show that the overall accuracy of this object-based approach was 87.4 %. However, this method has some limitations in calculating number of houses. One of the reasons could be the houses pattern in Vietnam have very small sizes, there is no gap between two houses which leads to the mis classification. The results revealed that the main direction of expansion of urban in Can Tho city from 2006 to 2012 is South- West, this development is concordant with actual planning of Can Tho City.
