The study aimed to examine the difficulties faced by third year EFL students in the process of self-study writing and figure out some methods to promote self-study for this skill. The instruments of questionnaire and interviews were employed to collect the research data. The collected data from the research tools would be analyzed thematically and qualitatively using SPSS version 20. The results showed that students encountered a number of problems both subjectively and objectively, especially vocabulary and grammar ones when learning to write on their own. Some suggestions were proposed to help raise students’ awareness of the important role of improving self-study as well as enhancing their writing skills through the benefits of self-study
