The majority of domestic waste in urban areas is discharged into rivers. However, there is still no reasonable mechanism in these drainage systems to open and close the sluices, resulting in local fl ooding during heavy rain and high tide and pollution. During the dry season, pollution and toxic stench harm the living environment and have a signifi cant impact on residents’ health. Specifi cally, for open drainage ditch systems in residential areas, schools, hospitals, and so on. This situation is quite common because the opening and closing of the sluices have not been automated according to the diff erence in water levels inside and outside, weather broadcast, etc. With the desire to contribute one more solution to reduce the men- tioned problems, the project "An IoT-based water level monitoring and management system for open ditch drainage" was carried out. This project aims at implementing a wireless sensor network that allows monitoring in real-time the water level, rainfall, and the status of sluices. The sensor data is inserted into a cloud database and then displayed on a web map. The system’s design not only provides for timely opening and closing of the sluices to prevent long-term fl ooding of pollution and foul odors in open ditches, but it also allows for data collection to aid in better management. Ex- periments with open ditches for drainage on Can Tho University’s Campus II have been used to assess the project’s feasibility.
