In this study, a comparative evaluation of total phenolic, total flavonoid, total tannin contents, and antioxidant activities of various extracts from Houttuynia cordata Thunb. (Saururaceae) was con-ducted. The solvents used in this study consisted of hexane, chloroform, acetonitrile, ethanol, methanol, and water. Results indicated that methanol extract possessed the highest total phenolic and total tannin contents (148.44 mg gallic acid equivalent/g extract and 30.11 mg catechin equivalent/g extract, respectively), while hexane extract presented the highest total flavo-noid content (71.11 mg rutin equivalent/g extract). Methanol extract showed the strongest antioxidant activities, followed by methanol extract in DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS [2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)], and reducing power methods. Gas chro-matography-mass spectrometry analysis detected twenty-four components in methanol extract with n-decanoic acid; decanoic acid, methyl ester; 3H-pyrazol-3-one,2,4-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethyl-; 2-undecanone as the major compounds. In comparison among six types of solvents, methanol extract constituted a promising source of antioxidant compounds and it was the most potential solvent for extracting bioactive compounds of H. cordata
