The study was conducted to investigate the current status of chemical and antibiotic application in intensive catfish farms in Can Tho city, Vietnam. The use of pharmaceuticals in intensive catfish farming was collected by interviewing 30 intensive catfish farming owners in Can Tho city. The investigation revealed that there were 19 disinfection chemicals, 20 restoratives and 26 kinds of drugs used in one culture cycle. The most applied antibiotics belong to Quinolones & Fluoroquinolone and -lactam groups. The origin and dosage of chemicals were not strictly controlled. The study also helped to identify the problems associated with the use of chemicals, which included lack of knowledge on recommended dose, method of application and non-selective use of chemicals. Farmer self-diagnosing fish disease, choosing drugs and applying dose accounted for 67, 57 and 53%, respectively.
