In 2012, there were about 24,573 ha of durian in Viet Nam distributed mainly at three regions including Highland, South-east, and the Mekong delta (MD); the area of the latter took almost 50% of that of the whole country. Recently, the most popular durian cultivar cultivated in the MD is ‘RI 6’, ‘Monthong’, and ‘Kho qua xanh’. Durian starts to flower naturally from Dec. – Jan., and is harvested from May to Jun. as of the effect of drought condition; however, in the MD durian can be induced flowering year round thanks to good irrigation-drainage system. Growers induce durian flowering by applying a combination of treatments including plastic mulching of the raised beds, ditch drainage within 30 – 40 days, and foliar spray of paclobutrazol (PBZ) at 1,000 1,500 ppm when leaves turn from light to dark green (2-3 months old). Period of the emergence of inflorescence buds and flowering ratio varies depending on cultivar, climate, and the extents of drought condition. ‘Kho qua xanh’ cultivar is easier to be induced for flowering than the others, i.e. ‘Sua hat lep’, ‘RI 6’, or ‘Monthong’. ‘Kho qua xanh’ cultivar starts to flowers concentratedly from 20 – 25 days after induction; whereas for the other cultivar flowers appear from 30 – 35 days after induction or longer, and there may be 2 – 3 times of flowering if there is heavy rains and the ditch is not drained completely.
