Rice production in the floodplains of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta is divided into two ecological zones including semi-dike and full-dike systems. The semi-dike system is characterized by the model of two rice crops per year (2C1Y) while the full-dike system is occupied by the model of three rice crops per year (3C1Y). A comparison of financial efficiency between the 2C1Y and 3C1Y models was carried out in An Giang province through a household survey of 60 rice farmers (30 in the semi-dike zone and 30 in the full-dike zone) in March 2022. Research results show that the profit of the 2C1Y model is VND65 46.9 million compared to the 3C1Y model of VND 61.0 million. However, the financial efficiency of the 2C1Y model is higher (1.20 compared to 0.99) because the production cost of the 3C1Y model is very high (VND 63.1 million versus VND 39.6 million). We can conclude that the more intensive rice cultivation, the higher the cost and the lower the financial efficiency. In addition, a high level of intensification also causes damage to the ecological systems. This result contributes to the orientation of agricultural transformation towards more sustainability in the future in countries with rice-based farming systems such as Vietnam.
