This study was used plant extracts to control Candida albicans and Propionibacterium acnes, the fungus and bacteria can cause human diseases. Natural α-mangostin was extracted from mangosteen pericarps with 96% ethanol by Soxhlet and natural citric acid was extracted from pineapples with water. The highest α - mangostin value in mangosteen pericarps extract was 17.04% (w/w). Thin layer chromatography (TCL) results showed that citric acid was exposed in pineapple extracts and citric acid concentration in extract was 3.60% (w/w). The antimicrobial activities of two extracts against Candida albicans and Propionibacterium acnes were determined by using the agar well diffusion method and broth dilution method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) were used to evaluate the effects of extracts on Candida albicans and P. acnes. Natural α-mangostin showed higher antifungal activities with MIC and MFC were 1000µg/mL and 2000µg/mL respectively than those of natural citric acid are 15000µg/mL and 60000µg/mL. α-mangostin also strongly controlled the growth and kill P. acnes with MIC and MFC were 8µg/mL and 31,25µg/mL respectively while the activity of citric acid on P. acnes was weaker than that of α-mangostin with MIC and MFC were 125µg/mL and 1250 µg/mL, respectively. The results suggested the possibility of employing natural α-mangostin and citric acid to control infectious diseases caused by C. albicans and P. acnes.
