Sixteen female Bach Thao goats (average live weight of 15.7±0.18 kg) were arranged in a completely randomized design with 4 treatments and 4 replicates per treatment. The treatments were supplementation of coconut oil at 0, 1, 2, 3%, corresponding to CO0, CO1, CO2 and CO3 treatments, respectively, to a 80% para grass plus 20% concentrate diet. The experiment period was 1 month of adaption and 3 months of measurements including nutrient intake and daily weight gain and within this period, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen retention, methane (CH4) production and rumen parameters were determined. The results showed that daily weight gain of goats in the CO2 treatment (93.3 g) was significantly higher (PDM and OM, CP, NDF and ADF digestibilities were not different (P>0.05) among the treatments, while EE digestibility was the highest for the CO2 treatment. Methane production was markedly reduced with increasing level of CO supplementation which peaked at 2% treatment level (CO2) measured at the end of the 4 months experiment. Results of the present study concluded that supplementing coconut oil at the rate of 2% could be a simple and viable environmentally friendly feeding strategy to produce ruminant, specifically goat without compromising in growth performance.
