In recent years goat production in Vietnam has been developed very fast around 30.0% annually with the total population of 2,556,300 heads in 2017, due to high demand of goat meat for consumption. Besides, the estimated dairy goat population is also increased with the moderate amount of 2-5.0% of the total goat population. There are many dairy goat production models based on farming systems developed by the small producers with the average of 150 heads/farm, which show the technical and economic effectiveness for production contributing to the poor alleviation and prosperous income. Goat milk and milk products have the high demand and price in some certain domestic markets, however the goat milk popularly accessed by the consumers are still limited with the small amount of goat milk, which is introduced in the markets. Goat meat is liked by the consumers with the highest price compared to beef or other meats. Dairy goat production is developed in both cities and rural areas, however there are lacking the dairy goat industries and the poor investment of goat milk processing. Therefore goat milk sold in the markets is mainly run by the small business with the limitation of diversification of goat milk products. In this paper, the current situation development, research results on breeds, nutrition, feed resources, dairy goat performance and reproduction, markets, diseases and development strategies adapting to climate change are presented. The constraints of production development such as low breed quality, few intensive large farms, limited disease studies, poor marketing and less international co-operation are also discussed.
