In Vietnam the human population was 90,728,000 in 2014 with the annual increase of 0.815% from 2011-2014 under good economic development. Therefore the human demand of animal protein for better nutrition requirements also increased. Livestock production is very important in different regions of Vietnam due to abundant feed resources, suitable climate, farmers’ feeding experiences and good income. Although there was a slight reduction on the population of pigs, ducks, buffaloes and cattle from 2010 to 2014, the annual increases for dairy cattle, chicken and goats were found. The importation of live animals, meat and milk has been recently increased, while the animal performance of meat, beef, eggs and milk has been improved. More financial and technical investment has been done for the development of dairy and beef cattle, goats, commercial pigs and chicken. This paper would present the current development status, research results and development strategies on animal production.
