Cinnamic acid (CA), a persistent organic compound, can accumulate in fatty tissue and move up to the food chain. Photocalytic reaction with a catalyst of electrospun Bi2O3 nanofibers was employed for degradation of CA. Bi2O3 nanofibers with diameters of 15– 45 nm have been successfully prepared by an electrospinning method using a precursor mixture of poly vinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/bismuth nitrate. The Bi2O3 nanofibers, obtained by carbonization the composite nanofibers at 500 oC for 2 hours, were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). For the degradation of CA, the photocatalytic reaction was carried out under a visible-light irradiation for removal of 99% CA. Thus, Bi2O3 electrospun nanofibers would be useful for photocatalytic degradation of CA under the visible-light irradiation.
