This study focuses on investigating the consolidation behavior of reconstituted clay using two different prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs), namely normal PVD (i.e., PVD with surcharge) and thermal PVD (i.e., PVD with surcharge combined with head). Large-scale consolidation tests of reconstituted soft Bangkok clay were conducted for both PVDs. The results obtained from the tests reveal that the thermal PVD gives a higher efficiency of the consolidation rate compared to that of a normal PVD. In addition, the magnitude of settlement of the clay specimen improved by the thermal PVD is higher than the normal PVD case because the presence of heat causes a collapse of the clay structure. Particularly, the value of horizontal coefficient of consolidation, hc, in the case of thermal PVD is 1.5 times higher than that in the normal PVD.
